“Ex-champ” John Whitaker wins the opening Prize of Bardusch competition

Stuttgart – 61 and not a bit tired: “Ex-champ” John Whitaker won the opening jumping competition for the Prize of Bardusch Textil Mietdienste GmbH & Co. KG at the 32nd International STUTTGART GERMAN MASTERS Horse Show on Thursday afternoon. In the saddle of the 14-year old stallion Argento, he was the quickest of the 85 starters when going clear in 58.52 seconds. A total thirty-three riders went clear. Course designer Luc Musette (Belgium) and his two assistants Christa and Karl-Georg Jung built a 420-metre course with eleven obstacles and 13 jumps.

The four-time European Champion from Great Britain has often come up trumps in the Hanns-Martin-Schleyer-Halle. He for instance won the Grand Prix in 1988 and 1997 and the MERCEDES GERMAN MASTER in 1988, 1989 and 1992. This time around he relegated Felix Haßmann (Germany) atop the 11-year old gelding Wallach SL Brazonado (0/58.65) to second. The Swede Petronella Andersson on her 18-year old Holstein gelding Mouse finished only 51 hundredth of a second down in third (0/59.16). She just fended off Michael Jung, the crowd favourite in Stuttgart, on the Baden Württemberg-bred 11-year old Sportsmann S (0/59.35). In coming fourth, the eventing Olympic Champion “Michi” Jung more than held his own against the jumping specialists.
